MISC:Ethiopia gave the world barley, coffee, and sorghum. It was
formerly known as Abyssinia. The Great Rift Valley is susceptible to
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Ethiopia has a strategic
geopolitical position along the world's busiest shipping lanes and
close to Arabian oilfields. 12% of the land is arable. 90% of the work
force is involved with agriculture. In 1986 Ethiopia spent over 20% of
its central government budget on its military. Member of UN since 1945.
Metric system is official but traditional systems are still used in
some areas.
